Wayne Simon

June 10, 1927 — December 28, 2015

Wayne J. "Joe" Simon, 88 of Watertown, passed away on Monday, December 28, 2015 at Watertown Regional Medical Center.
Joe was born on June 10, 1927 in Watertown, the son of Joseph and Marcella (Oestreicher) Simon. He was a 1945 graduate of Watertown High School, earned a BA in Education from UW-Whitewater, and in 1965 earned a MA in Elementary Administration from UW-Madison. In August of 1957, he married Patricia Hoffer at St. Henry Catholic Church of Watertown and the couple enjoyed 58 years of marriage. "Mr. Simon" was a teacher in Hellenville, Watertown and Greenfield, and served in Watertown Public School Administration as principle for 25 years. Time was spent specifically at Schurz, Lincoln, Webster, and Lebanon Elementary Schools. Joe was an active member of St. Bernard and St. Henry Catholic Churches, past Exalted Ruler of the Watertown Elks Club, and a member of the Jefferson County Retired Educators Association. He served as a board member at the Watertown Food Pantry and the Friends of the Watertown Library. He was an accomplished drummer and spent many Saturday nights playing in various musical groups, including the Jimmy Hartwig Orchestra. Joe will be remembered as a gentle, loving man with a wry sense of humor, a quintessential grandpa, and a true gentleman. He was proud of his work as an educator and wanted the very best for the children who were entrusted to him. The children were his priority. Joe was a devoted husband, father, and son and will be dearly missed.
Joe is survived by: his Wife Pat; Children John (Kathy) Simon of Edina, MN and Jane (Andy) Powell of Marine on St. Croix, MN; Grandchildren Tommy, Katie, Stella, Eloise; and Sister Pat Strahota of Temperance, MI. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephew, other relatives, friends, and a plethora of students.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials in Joe's honor to Friends of the Watertown Library, Educational Foundation of Watertown, WI or Watertown Catholic Schools would be appreciated.
