Oscar Hackbarth

Watertown-Oscar Hackbarth age 92 entered the church triumphant on January 9, 2013. He was born on April 16, 1920 in Richfield, Wisconsin. His parents moved to Watertown as a youngster where he entered the prep department of Northwestern College. He served in the US Army during World War II as a cryptographic technician in Patton's 3rd Army in the Signal Corps of the 95th Infantry Division.
Before going overseas he married Margaret Schmidt in St. Mark's church on March 26, 1944. Prior to entering the service he worked as a typesetter for the Dunseith Journal (North Dakota), the Lodi Enterprise and the Clark County Press in Neillsville, Wisconsin. Upon returning from Europe he served an apprenticeship under the GI Bill at the Watertown Daily Times. He also worked for the Milwaukee Journal and Sacramento Bee (California) before returning to Wisconsin in 1962.
Oscar took on a second career when he graduated from the Lutheran Lay Training Institute of Concordia College, Milwaukee. He served in the Southern and Central Illinois districts of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod as a Lay Assistant and on the synod's Board for World Missions. He was the Lay Assistant to the Pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska before retiring in 1985. After retirement he served on the Lutheran church's South Wisconsin District Board of Directors. Together with his wife, Margaret, they also volunteered at the Lutheran Chapel on the University of Wisconsin - Madison campus working with international students in English as second language classes. Oscar was a charter member of AMVETS Post 35 in Watertown.
Oscar and Margaret had three children. Richard (JoAnne) Hackbarth, the first baby born in Watertown on January 1, 1945, and Warren Hackbarth and Mark (Yumi) Hackbarth. Oscar and Margaret have three grandchildren: Richard D. (Tracey) Hackbarth; Kirstin (Roger) Meier, and Rebecca (William) Sitas; and nine great-grandchildren Abigail, Thomas, Samuel and John Hackbarth; Karahlyn and Reidun Meier; Kathryn, Naomi, and Leah Sitas.
Oscar's parents were Richard and Alwina (Korth) Hackbarth. Brothers Alfred, Rudy and sister Grace preceded Oscar in death. Surviving are brothers Rev. Victor Hackbarth, George and Marilyn Hackbarth, and sister-in-law Ramona Hackbarth and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 1:30 PM and funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM January 13, 2013 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Watertown with Rev. Victor Tegtmeier presiding. Burial will be at Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery in Lebanon following the service. Memorials may be made to the missions department of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, Project Heifer International, Feed the Children or other nonprofits of your choice
