Mary D. Carthew passed away at home on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 in Watertown, WI, with family and friends by her side.
Mary was born in Platteville, WI, on May 19, 1927, the youngest child of John W. Burris and Helen (Millman) Burris. Following graduation from Platteville High School, she earned her teaching credentials at the Normal School (now the University of Wisconsin-Platteville) and taught kindergarten and first grade while living in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Colorado, and Wisconsin. On June 14, 1949 she married Douglas Carthew of Platteville, who preceded her in death on January 6, 2000.
She leaves behind her daughter Darcy and son-in-law Michael Henriksen of Watertown, WI; her granddaughter Devon Roden of Atlantic Beach, FL; and her grandson Todd Inman, also of Atlantic Beach; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Until recently Mary enjoyed her retirement years in Calabash, NC, where she was known and loved for her tournament-winning golf skills, her deft hand at bridge, and her easy-breezy ability to make friends wherever she went.
We love you, Nana. Peace be with you.
A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Memorials in Mary’s honor to a resource of one’s choice would be appreciated.
