Waterloo / Verona - Margo M. Cronin (Setz), age 90, passed away peacefully at
Agrace Hospicecare, on February 18, 2014 supported by her loving family.
Margo was born at Madison General Hospital, on October 22, 1923, the daughter of Arthur R. and Mae (Stokes) Setz. Grandparents were Henry & Anna Stokes and Robert & Ida Setz. Margo was raised in Waterloo, WI and Graduated from Waterloo High School in 1942. While in high school she served as an accompanist for musical soloists and groups at the school performances. Margo also attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison studying Home Economics.
Margo was united in marriage to Gordon V Cronin on April 26, 1947, at the United Methodist Church in Waterloo, WI. She worked at Virchow Krause Accounting before working at the family business, Service Insurance Agency in Waterloo. Gordon and Margo opened Cronin Shoe Store on December 7, 1947 and she split time working between the Insurance agency and shoe store. In 1977 they closed the shoe store and bought Service Insurance and operated it until their retirement in 1989.
Margo was extremely active in the community. Some of her activities included; Waterloo Methodist Church organist and Sunday school teacher. She also served as secretary and treasurer of United Methodist Women and Treasurer of the Memorial Committee.
She was a member and held many offices in Waterloo Women's Club, and served as President of Jefferson County Women's Club, and held 2nd District offices. Margo was also a member of the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce and held various offices in the organization.
Margo was very active in the Waterloo Alumni Association, having held secretary and treasurer posts for many years. She was honored for never having missed an Alumni Banquet, until recently. Margo was the founder of the "Senior Tea" in Waterloo. This annual event was a tea party for graduating senior girls and their Mother's, a tradition that continues today. She also was member of the Waterloo Lions Club.
Margo worked at Waterloo's Firemen's Park in many capacities since she was in grade school. In 1987 she and Gordon made their largest contribution to the park, when they spearheaded the restoration of Waterloo's 1911 C. W. Parker Carousel. Their fundraising efforts restored the beauty back to this local treasure. They joined the National Carousel Association and attended many conferences and conventions and even hosted one. A crowning accomplishment was getting the carousel registered by the State of Wisconsin Historical Society and the National Register. Margo was instrumental in getting the Waterloo water tower painted in a carousel theme.
In 1990 Margo and Gordon were named one of the top ten people who "made a difference", by the Wisconsin State Journal. They also were named 2005, City of Waterloo, Volunteers of the Year and recently received a proclamation from the Waterloo City Council recognizing them for outstanding civic contributions over the years.
She is survived by Daughter Jane (Tim) Haldiman of Waterloo; Son Don (Connie), Madison. Grandchildren, Trent (Chrissy) Haldiman, Waterloo; Olivia, Graham & Arthur Cronin, Madison. Great Grand Daughter, Gia Haldiman.
She was preceded in death by 34 days, her husband of 66 years, Gordon; and parents Art & Mae Setz.
Visitation will be at United Methodist Church, 348 W. Madison St., Waterloo, WI from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 23, 2014. A service will follow at 3:00 p.m. Rev Jan Beutin will be presiding over services. Pedersen-Nowatka Funeral Homes will be assisting the family with arrangements. Margo was an exceptional woman. Her passion for cooking, decorating and caring for her family was the core of her being. She was always one to listen and provide thoughtful answers to guide you on life's path. You are loved and missed so much. Rest now as you are reunited with Dad. Thank You.
