Mabel Faye Lauridsen, 91 of Oconomowoc, WI, (formerly of Sioux City, IA) passed away peacefully on February 4, 2017 at her home at Shorehaven of Oconomowoc.
Mabel dictated her life story to a staff member of Shorehaven. The following are her words:
"I was born on April 1, 1925 in Anthon, IA. Throughout most of my life, someone was always trying to pull an April fool's joke on me. I lived on a farm until age 3 and helped with anything my parents needed. I enjoyed reading and playing games. But what I enjoyed most was spending time with my family. We were a very close family.
My husband Carleton and I grew up in the same neighborhood, and we played together as kids. My brother Bob and Carleton walked me to school every day from age 13. I worked at the Morningside College Library. My sister Geraldine would meet me at the library where I worked and walk home with me every night. Sometimes we would stop at the pharmacy and have a Cherry Coke. Sometimes Carleton would join us.
Carleton and I started dating when I was 18. I went to Morningside College (a Methodist college). Carleton and I married and had three children - Fred, Robert, and Karen. I worked as a school teacher. I taught every grade, but my favorite was 2nd. We enjoyed camping and traveling as a family. Carleton passed away on February 20, 2012. That was a very sad time in my life.
As an adult I enjoyed reading, going out with friends, sewing, quilting, knitting, and working with ceramics. I love writing letters to people. I love dogs and birds. My three children will always be very important to me. I have 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, and I am very proud of each one of them."
Mabel is survived by: her Sons Fred (Dolores) of Omaha, NE and Robert (Cynthia) of Oconomowoc, WI; Grandchildren Fred Jr. (Honey) Lauridsen, Rommel (Deborah) Lauridsen, Jamie Towers, and Devon Towers; Great-Grandchildren Gabriel, Aubrey, and Madisen; and her Sister Geraldine McKim of Westminster, CO.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, husband, Daughter Karen, and 2 Brothers Robert and John.
The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff of Shorehaven Health and Rehab Center for the excellent care provided. Also, Mabel was blessed to have an "adopted" family, the Bensons. Their visits and love were cherished and appreciated.
Memorials in Mabel's honor to the Shorehaven Charitable Foundation would be appreciated.
