LaVern R. "Whitey" Schoen, 88 of the Town of Portland, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born on October 19, 1927 at home in the Town of Portland, the son of Oscar and Minnie (Lessner) Schoen. Whitey was born, lived, and died in the same house. On October 23, 1954 he married Mary Jean Stangler at St. Henry Catholic Church of Watertown. The couple enjoyed 61 years of marriage and raised 3 children. The family worked together farming the family land. By 1975, Whitey and Jeanie made the transition from farming and opened "Whitey's Sport Shop" on the family property. He had a passion for the outdoors, spending time hunting, trapping, fishing, and trapshooting. He was an active member of every outdoor club around. He never advertised his business, obtaining a dedicated customer base through the organizations and clubs he was involved in. Whitey was a talker and was always smiling and loved nothing more than hearing and sharing tales with his customers and trapshooting buddies. He never met a person he didn't like and never met a horse he did! He was deeply loved by many and will be missed.
Whitey is survived by: his Wife Jeanie Schoen of the Town of Portland; Children Ann Marie Schoen of Oshkosh, James Michael (Debra) Schoen of the Town of Portland, and Theresa Jean Schoen of Monona; Grandchildren Melisa (John) Causey of Midlothian, VA, and Jesica (Cameron Lowrey) Schoen of East Bristol. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, devoted customers, and many friends.
He is preceded in death by: his parents, Brother LeRoy, and Grandson Nicholas James in infancy.
