John Patrick McDermott went home to be with the Lord on January 13, 2023. John was born on February 14, 1948, in Jackson Heights, Long Island, New York, the son of Joseph and Dorothy (Stalf) McDermott.
John graduated from Hicksville High School in 1966 and joined the Navy Submarine Service. He spent twenty-two years in the Submarine Service Atlantic Fleet. His rank was Chief Petty Officer. On one of his submarine trips he went under the Artic Circle to the North Pole. He said it was beautiful but really cold. He loved being in the Navy.
When he retired from the Navy he went to college and graduated with an Electronic Engineering degree. He worked for Raytheon and General Dynamics with their military contracts (Abrams Tanks). He went back to college again and earned an MBA and became a section manger of the Analog Department.
John married his soulmate Susan Claire Cummings on November 6, 1993, and was happily married for twenty-nine years.
John loved HO model trains and spent many hours designing and building layouts and running the trains around. He was a member of the Waterloo American Legion Post 0233 and enjoyed working there.
John is survived by his loving wife Susan and five children: Shannon (Rodney) McDermott True, Kimberly (David Dicks) McDermott, Sean (Elena) McDermott of FL, David (Jamie) Cummings of Deerfield, and Michael (Jessica) Cummings of Lake Mills.
John was most proud of his ten grandchildren: Zachery McDermott, Breeanna Weekley, Logan Hallmeyer, Ean Dicks, Shaylen McDermott, Kaleb Johnson, Kyle and Ian Cummings and Karis and Kaia Cummings. He is also survived by his sister Jeanette (Cliff) Repperger of Cape Coral, FL, and brother Edward (Joni) McDermott of Levittown, Long Island, New York. John is also survived by a number of nephews, one niece, other relatives and friends.
John is preceded in death by his parents, grandson Wade, and a number of other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s name to the Waterloo American Legion Post 0233 would be appreciated by the family.
A Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 20, 2023, at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Waterloo, WI, with Pastor James Adomeit presiding. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, January 19, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church and on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Military Honors will follow the funeral service at the church, and John will be laid to rest at Washington Cemetery in Portland following the service.
