Herschel F. Wickert, 80, of Watertown passed away on January 17, 2024, at his home in Watertown.
Herschel was born on December 11, 1943, in Watertown, the son of Fredrick and Elaine (Hollatz) Wickert. After graduating from Watertown High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country during Vietnam. After his service, Herschel married the love of his life Janet Munzel on August 6, 1966, at the Watertown Moravian Church and the couple enjoyed 54 years of marriage until Jan’s passing in 2020. Herschel and Jan were long-time members of Watertown Moravian Church and Herschel served as sexton of the Watertown Moravian Cemetery. In his free time, he enjoyed going up north with his family to his hunting land. Herschel supported conservation efforts and was a member of the Izaak Walton League where he won the Ike of the Year Award. Herschel also liked bowling, softball, playing cards, crosswords and sudoku puzzles, old country music, and watching Packers and Brewers games. When it came to drinks, he was known to enjoy a Brandy Manhattan on the rocks with olives and a dash of bitters. Great memories were made with family and friends when Herschel would have a beer and tell his stories. During the week, he could often be found at the Two Sisters Café of Watertown where he was lovingly referred to as “Hershy” and ushered to his special table, number 17. Above all else, Herschel loved his family and spent time with them as often as possible.
Herschel is survived by: his children Chad (Stacy) Wickert and Richelle (Ryan) Holtzman; 7 grandchildren Taylor, Hannah, Marni, Bennett, Bryce, Jake, and Ben; and sister Darlene Nicodemus. Herschel is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Herschel is preceded in death by his parents, wife Janet, and sister Renee.
