Harold "Red" W. McGovern, 100 of Waterloo, passed away on Friday June 14, 2013 at home.
Red was born on June 5, 1913 in Richwood the son of Wilbur and Emma (Prietz) McGovern. He married Celia Schenck on June 24, 1939 in Dubuque, IA. He was the owner of the Portland Garage & Body shop and McGovern's Inn in Portland. He loved playing cards and spending time with his family. Red was well known for his entertaining, joke telling and his "How About That".
Survivors include: five children Don (Delores) McGovern of Waterloo, Judy Ninedorf of Ft. Pierce, FL, Molly (Darrell) Sullivan of Waterloo, Mike (Debbie) McGovern of Waterloo and Patty McGovern of Waterloo; nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; brother Eddie (Kay) Rollert; three sisters Vira Neitzel, Myrtle Jahnz and June (Bud) Ward; also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, grandson Eddie Sullivan, granddaughter Lauri Sullivan, great granddaughter Gracie Jo Sullivan, four sisters and two brothers and a son in law Frank Ninedorf. Memorials may be given to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday June 18, 2013 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waterloo with the Rev. Robert Kosky officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Washington Cemetery in the Town of Portland.
