Gladys E. Schoeffel, 95, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at her home.
Gladys was born on April 20, 1929, the daughter of Albert and Emma (Petraschke) Topel. She married the love of her life Arvin Schoeffel on April 24, 1948 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, and the couple enjoyed 59 years of marriage before his passing in 2007. Gladys worked as a tax preparer for 50 years. She started as the sole staff for Ed Virchow and Sam Krause, the founders of Virchow, Krause and Company. Gladys specialized in farm returns. In her free time she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and word scrambles. She also loved to go fishing when she and Arvin could sneak away. She always caught the most fish; and of course dad was always busy taking the fish off her hook so he came up short.
Gladys is survived by her children Susan Schoeffel, Thomas Schoeffel, and Nancy (James McEuin) Schoeffel. She is also survived by a number of other relatives, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, her sister Mary J. Topel, 1 daughter-in-law, 1 brother-in-law, and 1 sister-in-law.
A private family graveside service will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Waterloo.
The family would especially like to thank the nurses and staff at Rainbow Hospice for their help and guidance.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Waterloo or a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.
