Emily Streich, 96 of Watertown, was called home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ on Monday evening, March 2, 2015.
She spent her last seven years at Marquardt Health Center. Emily was born in the Town of Portland, Monroe County, Wisconsin on September 5, 1918 to Oscar and Olga (Zebell) Streich. She was an only child and never married.
Emily graduated from Columbia School of Nursing in 1939 and worked at several different hospitals. In 1943 she enlisted in the U.S. Army Nursing Corp. She spent two years in the Persian Gulf command at a field hospital in Ahvaz, Iran. Another two years was served in various Army hospitals stateside. After her discharge as a Captain in 1947, she took more college courses and went into public health nursing. In 1953, she came to Watertown to become the first Registered Nurse at Bethesda Lutheran Home. She stayed there thirty-plus years. After her retirement, she became a very active volunteer, helping needy people and encouraging many with her strong faith. She was a very active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, serving as an officer in the Lady's Aid program, LWMS, and attending Bible classes. She was a member of Watertown Community Concerts, AARP, "Rock and Rollers", and the Pregnancy Counseling Center.
A close friend and caretaker, Doris Nehls survives, as do several cousins. Also, her many church friends and co-workers from Bethesda who kept in touch with her for so many years will now have an empty spot on their mailing lists.
If desired, memorials in Emily's honor may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Pederson-Nowatka Funeral Home with the Rev. Rodney Warnecke presiding. Visitation will be from 1:00PM until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery at a later date.
