Duane A. “Butch” Mayer, 83 of Watertown, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 5, 2024, at The Marquardt of Watertown.
Duane was born October 22, 1940, in Beaver Dam, the son of Arnold and Jeanette (Johnson) Mayer. On October 12, 1959, Duane was united in marriage with Hazel Borck and the couple shared many happy years of marriage together before her passing in 2021. He was self-employed in the painting and restoration business all his life until retirement. Duane and Hazel spent many winters in Florida, where they went to flea markets and waited out the cold weather of Wisconsin. Duane was a faithful member of Promised Land Church in Watertown. He was strong in his faith and never missed a Sunday at church. Duane liked to greet people as they came in and out of church. He also volunteered at Marquardt Manor. Duane had little free time, as he spent as much time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as he possibly could. He was gifted a shirt that read “Grandpa is my name, spoiling is my game” and Duane took that thought to heart. He enjoyed playing softball back in the day and was President of the Richwood Softball League for many years. Duane also spent time up north deer hunting with his family. His legacy of faith and family will be cherished by all those who knew him.
Duane is survived by: his children Debbie (Allen) Hamann and Danny (Penny) Mayer; grandchildren Joshua (Jenny) Hamann, Chad (Arissa) Hamann, Sonya (Kong) Vang and Kayla (Tim) Suckow; great-grandchildren Camryn, Jackson, Ali, Seth, Isaac, Kenji, Madison, Sofia, Emilia, Yoshi, Brooklynn, Jett, and Grayson; siblings Barbara (Wayne) Jagow, Gerald (Gail) Mayer, Kent (Helen) Mayer, and Steve (Larry) Mayer; and in-laws Elaine Borck, Luella Voight, and Mary Lou (Myron) Moldenhauer. Duane is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Duane is preceded in death by his parents, wife Hazel, siblings Terry Mayer, JoEllen (Greg) Merkt and Cindy Mayer, in-laws Clarence (Mildred) Borck, Robert Voight, and Ervin Borck, and other relatives.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of Marquardt and Common Heart Hospice, especially Barb and Shari, for the loving care provided.
Memorials in Duane’s name may be made to Promised Land Church if desired.
