Virgil L. "Doc" Sharp, 91 of Waterloo passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Marquardt Health Center of Watertown.
Doc was born Virgil LeRoy Sharp on June 24, 1922 near the town of Phillips, Wisconsin to Floyd and Eva (Feight) Sharp. He was a graduate of Freeport High School, the University of Dubuque and completed his medical doctoral studies at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in June of 1945. Doc practiced in Cambridge, WI, Milwaukee, WI, the state of Colorado but spent the majority of his career in Waterloo - from 1976 until his retirement in 2006 at the age of 83. Doc was formerly the Chief of Staff at Columbus Community Hospital. He was a member of the Wisconsin Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons and served for five years as the state secretary of WAOPS. He was a licensed pilot from 1967 to 2006 and had nearly 2000 hours of logged flight time. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and a member of the Civil Aviation Medical Association for 30 years. Doc was a Colonel in the Wisconsin Army National Guard and served as a general medical officer with the 13th Evac Hospital and later as a flight surgeon with the 47th Aviation Battalion in Madison. Doc was a 30+ year member of Waterloo Masonic Lodge #63, Scottish Rite Valley of Madison, and past Sovereign Prince of the Princes of Jerusalem and Zor Shrine, all of Madison.
Doc is survived by: his devoted wife, Joan, sons; David, Randall and Eric and grandson Thomas Sharp. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and patients.
He is preceded in death by: sisters, Evangeline Morris and Joan Hyland, Brother Dr. T. Robert Sharp and wives Dorothy and Lorraine.
Memorials can be made to Waterloo United Methodist Church and/or Jefferson County Humane Society.
A funeral service will be at 11:00AM Wednesday April 16, 2014 at Waterloo United Methodist Church with Pastor Jan Beutin presiding. Visitations will be held Tuesday from 4-7PM at the church with a Masonic Service to follow and Wednesday from 10:00AM until the time of service, also at the church. Burial will be at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, WI.
