Dr. Max W. Barnes, 88 of Watertown passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at his home.
Dr. Barnes was born on February 21, 1931 in Ottawa, Kansas the son of Grover and Nellie (Dant) Barnes. He married the love of his life Joyce Huff on July 13, 1963 in Walnut Creek, California and the couple enjoyed 49 years of marriage before her passing in 2012. Dr. Barnes was foremost a teacher, but also an ordained pastor, a skilled carpenter, a hobby farmer and a loving father. His interest in carpentry started while serving in the army when he was first stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Dr. Barnes began his pastoral and teaching ministries at the Valley Baptist Church and Pine Crest Private Schools of North Hollywood, California. He has taught Bible and Biblical Languages at Pillsbury Baptist Bible College, Bob Jones University and Pensacola Christian College. He came to Maranatha Baptist Graduate School of Theology in 1970 to teach Bible and Biblical Languages and to serve as Dean of Students. After a one-year absence, he returned in 1976 to teach Bible and Biblical Languages in the Graduate School of Theology. (From 1983-85 Bulletin, Maranatha Baptist Graduate School of Theology) Dr. Barnes retired from Maranatha Baptist in 2000. Above all he touched the lives of many people, inspired students, and left a Godly legacy to all his children. He will be dearly missed by those who were blessed to have known him.
Survivors include: three children Tamara (Tim) Collupy of Watertown, Traci (Dan) Poppert of Frederick, MD and Torrey Barnes of Oconomowoc; seven grandchildren Dylan, Zoe, Kyle, Caitlin, Ransom, Ryder and Rhys; Brother Joe Barnes of Texas. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and 6 siblings.
Funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, on Saturday July 13, 2019 at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert J. Loggans presiding. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:00 PM until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Ebenezer Moravian Cemetery in Watertown.
