Adeline I. Riege, 94 of Waterloo, died on Friday, January 29, 2016 at the Highland House of Waterloo surrounded by her family.
Adeline was born on June 4, 1921, in Town of York, WI, the daughter of William and Meta (Borck) Kegler. She was baptized by Pastor Kuhlow at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church on June 26, 1921. For her first 7 years of schooling, Adeline went to the country school at York Center. She only spoke German when she started school! The school was 2.5 miles from their farm and they usually had to walk. On really cold days, her father would take her and the neighbor children in the sleigh. Adeline then went to school at St. John's in Waterloo for 2 years so she could be confirmed. She was confirmed March 25, 1934 by Pastor Thurow. She went to Waterloo High School and graduated in 1938. After high school she went to work in the shoe factory. Adeline married Norman Riege at St. Johns on October 28, 1939 by Pastor Nitz. She and Norman raised 5 children. To help the income on the farm, Adeline worked at Van Holten's Bag Plant for many years. She then worked as a dietary aid at both Bethesda and Willowbrook Nursing Home. She retired in 1982. When she retired, she took knitting and crocheting classes. She made lots of afghans and made at least one baby blanket for the first great-grandchild in each family. She also was a volunteer at the Nutrition Site and belonged to the Dorcas and Owls. She loved the visits from grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always interested in what they were doing and places they were going. She was very proud of them all.
The family would like to thank the Highland House for their loving care of our mother.
Memorials in Adeline's honor to St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Rainbow Hospice, or the Highland House would be appreciated.
Adeline is survived by: her children Donald (Wanda) Riege, David Riege, Roger (Carole) Riege, Sharon (Richard) Spies all of Waterloo, and Dianne (Robert) Hamann of Watertown; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 9 great, great-grandchildren; Brother Fritz Kegler; Brothers-in-Laws Jerome Riege and Bob Hein; Sisters-in-Law Eleanor Betlach, Lillian Riege, and Jean Jordan.
